A medium-sized woodland tree, reaching 10-25 metres in height at maturity. Attracting nectar-feeding birds and insects, E. leucoxylon is regularly planted for habitat, honey production, shade, windbreaks, and ornamental purposes. Flowers are usually present in autumn and winter and may be cream, white, or pink. Bark is retained on the lower trunk, but the upper trunk and branches are smooth-barked and cream to bluish grey in colour. Leaves hang vertically off an open crown and are narrow, lance-shaped, grey-green, and grow to 20cm in length. Native to a dry-summer climate, it performs best in well-drained, moist soils, and grows well in alkaline soils. Once established it is tolerant of frost and extended dry conditions.
