A large tree, reaching 20-30 metres in height at maturity. E. melliodora has a predominantly yellow trunk often developing pink, red, yellow and green colouration as the tree matures. With a large, spreading, dense crown it is a good selection as a shade tree or for encouraging native fauna. Flowers are typically white to cream-coloured and give a strong honey smell from which it gets its name; melleus meaning honey, and odora meaning pleasant smell. Very popular for supporting honey production. Frequent in dry-sclerophyll forest or woodland, E. melliodora prefers alluvial soils although is tolerant of most soil types including well-drained or dry, infertile, and shallow soils. Once established it is tolerant of frost and extended dry conditions.
