A tall tree, reaching 20-40 metres in height at maturity. E. viminalis has a predominantly white trunk and branches shedding long ribbons in summer. With a large, spreading, dense crown and long broad trunk, it is a good selection as a shade tree and provides excellent habitat for native fauna, including koalas. Flowers are typically white to cream-coloured. Frequent in forests and woodland the species is tolerant of most soil types including well-drained or infertile soils - although it adapts well to wetter climates and soil types. E. viminalis is tolerant of high winds and low temperatures.
